Ben Rector Puts On a Great Show At The Fonda Theatre Along With His Opening Act Gavin James
Last night, TheSkinny365 sent me to The Fonda Theatre to check out the group "Ben Rector". There were positive signs from the start; long lines, excited fans, and a virtually full Fonda Theatre. The opening act was an Irish artist, Gavin James, who sung soft love songs while playing the acoustic guitar. With song titles such as "Nervous' and "When are you coming home", you began to see couples holding each other slowly rocking from side to side. Gavin's vocal range was more than impressive and his on-stage charisma made the audience feel as if they knew each other. For one of his last songs, he came out into the center of the crowd to preform a Ray Charles number without any electric amplification. As Gavin James came to an end, I began to wonder if Ben Rector will be able to top Gavin's performance. Right off the bat, Ben Rector and his 5 member band came out with their upbeat pop sound that had the audience singing and moving around. The song "Brand New" was a fan favorite, with lyrics such as "I feel like a young John Cusack, like making big mistakes. I feel like for the first time in a long time I am not afraid ". Ben Rector also featured a chorus from the temptations, "I've got sunshine" and through out their performance they featured many other iconic melodies and lyrics. At one point in the show, a fan cheering in one of the front rows, holding a sign, yelled "I've tweeted you almost 1000 times! Why no response?!", he then said, "Im going to be REAL REAL right now. When a fan tweets me a lot, I tend to mute them. Sorry!", and then jumped right into the next song. Even with that blunder, throughout the show he had funny stories and shared a few memories from touring around the country. For his encore performance, he ended with a semi-dubstep backbeat and had the entire crowd dancing and singing and capped off the night by jumping off the stage to sing and dance with his crowd. It was an amazing way to end the show and everyone left with a smile on their face. All-and-all, both Ben Rector and Gavin James put on shows that their fans will always remember.
