Who will benefit from the passing of Antonin Scalia?
Antonin Scalia, who was a sitting Supreme Court Justice for over 30 years, was found dead at the age of 79, reports KVIA. It’s believed that he died of natural causes although the FBI are currently looking into it. Scalia was at the Cibolo Creek Ranch where he was attending a private hunting event on Friday. When he was a no show for breakfast on the following day, hotel staff went to his room and found the body. “I was told it was this morning,” U.S. District Judge Fred Biery said of Scalia’s death. “It happened on a ranch out near Marfa. As far as the details, I think it’s pretty vague right now as to how. My reaction is it’s very unfortunate. It’s unfortunate with any death, and politically in the presidential cycle we’re in, my educated guess is nothing will happen before the next president is elected.” Scalia was known to be one of the most conservative justices in recent memory. He stood firm on his beliefs that marriage is strictly between a man and a woman as well as the idea that woman should not be allowed the right to choose. “To allow the policy question of same-sex marriage to be considered and resolved by a select, patrician, highly unrepresentative panel of nine is to violate a principle even more fundamental than no taxation without representation: no social transformation without representation.” With Scalia’s passing, it puts major pressure on President Obama to get a new court justice in before his term ends in 10 months. But there are many questions to be asked. Will congress allow him to get a new justice in before his term is over? If not, what will this do for the current candidates running for President? Will it bring out more potential Bernie Sanders voters or Hillary Clinton Voters? Will Donald Trump be able to use this as a way to gain more supports or will Ted Cruz capitalize? What do you think?
